Art Piece:
The intention of this piece Jewel in the Lotus is to encouraging viewers to reflect on their own journey toward compassion and wisdom.
Jewel in the Lotus is inspired by the Tibetan Buddhism mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum."
While you could read a whole book on this mantra, and there are varying degrees in which it is interpreted...
- "Om": Represents the sound of the universe and the interconnectedness of all things.
- "Mani": Meaning "jewel, symbolises compassion and the intention to help others.
- "Padme": Meaning "lotus," it represents wisdom. Just as a lotus grows from mud but remains uncontaminated, wisdom can arise in the midst of samsara (cyclic existence).
- "Hum": This syllable indicates indivisibility, symbolising the unity of method and wisdom
The Animal Totems & Elements:
Each element—lotus, stars, water, and elephant—interacts to create a visual representation of the mantra, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own path towards compassion and wisdom. The integration of these elements conveys the message that within the complexities of life (water), one can find purity and enlightenment (lotus), be guided by the light of universal wisdom (stars), and possess the strength and resilience (elephant) needed to achieve spiritual transformation.
